Don Vicente

This portrait is from Don Vicente, one of the guides of the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve. He spend all day with me and my friends, and he was really friendly. During the day I took some photos of him, but in none of them he looked straight to my camera, maybe he was protecting himself. Below from the photo is some information about the Reserve.

The Sian Ka'an Biosphere reserve is a tract of 500,000 hectares (1.3 million acres) set aside in 1986 to preserve tropical forests, savannas, mangroves, coastal and marine habitats, and 110km (70 miles) of coastal reefs. The area is home to jaguars, pumas, ocelots, margays, jaguarondis, spider and howler monkeys, tapirs, white-lipped and collared peccaries, manatees, brocket and white-tailed deer, crocodiles, and green, loggerhead, hawksbill, and leatherback sea turtles. It also protects 366 species of birds -- you might catch a glimpse of an ocellated turkey, a great curassow, a brilliantly colored parrot, a toucan or trogon, a white ibis, a roseate spoonbill, a jabiru (or wood stork), a flamingo, or one of 15 species of herons, egrets, and bitterns. The park has three parts: a "core zone" restricted to research; a "buffer zone," to which visitors and families already living there have restricted use; and a "cooperation zone," which is outside the reserve but vital to its preservation. Driving south from Tulum on Highway 307, everything on the left side of the highway is part of the reserve. Most tours enter the bio preserve on this side at the community of Muyil where there are canals built by the Maya that lead to a lagoon. At least 22 archaeological sites have been charted within Sian Ka'an.

Portraits - French Homeless

From now on, I will publish here one portrait every day, from people I meet on the streets, friends, personalities, politicians, musicians, actors etc.
The first one is from a homeless I photograph in the streets of Paris last October, I ask him if I could take him a photo which he kindly agree. Notice his amazing blue eyes.

World Press Photo 2006 Exhibition

From 03 November 2006 until 17 December 2006 and if you are in Denmark you could visit the World Press Photo exhibition with the photos from the 2006 winner Photographers. This year 4,448 professional photographers from 122 countries entered 83,044 images in the most prestigious annual international competition in press photography.
The winner was Finbarr O'Reilly from Canada representing Reuters, and shows a Nigerian woman and the fingers of her child like it is described down:
"The fingers of malnourished one-year-old Alassa Galisou are pressed against the lips of his mother Fatou Ousseini at an emergency feeding center in the town of Tahoua in northwestern Niger, on August 1. One of the worst droughts in recent times together with a particularly heavy plague of locusts had destroyed the previous year's harvest, leaving millions of people severely short of food. Heavy rains promised well for the 2005 crops, but hindered aid workers bringing supplies. Relief had been slow to come. Accusations were leveled variously blaming the United Nations, Western governments, the international aid community and officials in Niger itself for failing to respond early enough to an imminent crisis. Just weeks before the photo was taken leaders at the G8 summit of the world's richest nations had resolved to make poverty history by doubling aid to Africa by 2010." Hubertus Jagt 2006

Photos from "Hubertus Jagt", a traditional annual horse race held in the north of Copenhagen in a park "Dyrehaven" (animal garden) on the first weekend of November and no matter how the weather is people come to watch the race, this year 50.000 people participated wearing big rain coats and bringing hot coffee and strong bitters to keep the warmth.
The race has it's origin in England were they hunt foxes, here in Denmark the horse riders used to hunt for wildlife like deers but now they instead turned it into a race and the only remains from the time of hunting wildlife is the fact that the two front horse riders wear a fox tail on their red jacket.
The highest point of the race is a jump followed by big water whole here some of the riders went for a “nice and cold bath”, the first Rider crossing the finishing line gets a very prestigious prize and get honoured at a special dinner the same night.

Victim of Pollution??

After a couple of photos on Amager Strand Park, a beach located in the south part of Copenhagen I saw this death seagull on the sand and near by some chimneys from an Industrial complex. My question is: Is it the seagull a victim of pollution?

Vesterhavet

Photos from Vesterhavet, the nice beach houses and the beach where the Germans built bunkers strategically all along the west coastal line during the World War II to prevent the English from entering Denmark by boat and thus threatening the German empire.
